The Brief

Using Nature, Architecture and one other area of your choice as a focus for well documented development, research, design & construct a container that is avant-garde and that challenges perceptions of what a container can be.

Creative Container Project

The container was first inspired by the mechanism research. After seeing a video of a 2D iris mechanism, I was attracted to the mechanism’s elegant opening/movements and I was intrigued at how the components move together without any collisions. Moreover, I chose this mechanism for its sense of surprise. The layering of the compartments was influenced by the layering seen in Architecture.

The number of compartments was influenced by Nature, as during my research on biomimicry, I stumbled across an article explaining why many of the flowers are five-petaled. Moreover, the authors explained that this phenomenon, which may be correlated to strong regenerate power, is also present in other creatures such as starfish and sea urchins.

If I had more time on this project, I would change the finishing of the container and make the turning handle sturdier by either make it wider or manufacturing it out of other materials. Originally, I had also planned to include LED lights on the bottom so that the user gets an even bigger surprise when opening the container. However, due to time limitations for the coursework, that was not completed. Nonetheless, I am fairly pleased with what I have accomplished in the short amount of time given on this coursework.
